Brazilian Rain Tree  Chloroleucon tortum (formerly known as Pithecellobium tortum)

"Mmmm, where is that smell coming from?"  your friends ask when you are giving them a tour of the plants in your yard.

You answer, "Oh, that's the Brazilian rain tree.  It's right over here, come on!" and you lead them towards the specimen tree in the sunny corner of the yard.

"What a charming tree," says one of the women.  She buzzes, "Mmm, aahhh, I love that smell."

"Wow, look at those thorns," says one of the men.

"Nice trunk," says another. "Sculptural."

Your friends all nod and agree that the Brazilian rain tree is a distinctive tropical beauty, a veritable Carmen Miranda balancing a fruit basket filled with fragrant, fuzzy puffballs on her head.

Obviously, the thorns are to keep passersby from taking extreme liberties with their hands while she is engaged in performing her act of entertaining you with her superb fragrance and fancy footwork.

She originates from Tropical America, a spreading tree, generally under 10', and about that wide.
