Wild Tamarind  Lysiloma latisiliqua

Fast-growing (up to 60 feet), it is a nice tree for climbing.  Feel the smooth, gray bark, ideal for sitting in and reading comic books any old time.

Commonly found throughout the Keys and Caribbean, it develops into a great shade tree, with a weeping habit.  Salt-tolerant and disease-free once established, its only drawback is that heavy winds tend to break off branches.  To minimize wind damage, trim regularly.

Wild Tamarind features festively flirtatious, fragrant, fuzzy puffballs, found from February to September.

The one at left is planted just inside our front gate.  It has been in that spot for 5 years.  It was about 10 feet tall when it was planted and is now more than 20 feet tall.

The ones at right are in 3-gal. pots, about 2' high, and growing fast!
