Satinwood, Yellowheart  Zanthoxylum flavum

"Mmmm.  What's that I smell?"

"Oh, that must be the satinwood over there.  It's blooming now."

"You can smell it from way over here!  Mmmm!"

Satinwood is a small-to-medium sized tree with good salt- and drought-tolerance.

Its range is throughout the lower Florida Keys, and around the Caribbean.

Satinwood (also called yellowheart) was used in making cabinets, fine furniture and specialty items such as hand mirrors and hairbrushes (source).

Being a member of the citrus family Rutaceae, swallowtail butterflies will lay their eggs on the leaves.  You will see the adults fluttering nervously around, like parents at a kindergarten holiday show.

Use one as an accent tree or mix a few into your naturalized screening.

We grow them in a few different sizes.  Call for current availability.

At right, in 15-gal. concrete pots, about 8' planted height.
