Satinwood, Yellowheart Zanthoxylum flavum

"Mmmm. What's that I smell?"
"Oh, that must be the satinwood over there. It's blooming
now."
"You can smell it from way over here! Mmmm!" |
Satinwood is a small-to-medium sized tree with good salt-
and drought-tolerance.
Its range is throughout the lower Florida Keys, and
around the Caribbean. |
Satinwood (also called yellowheart) was used in making
cabinets, fine furniture and specialty items such as hand mirrors and
hairbrushes (source). |
Being a member of the citrus family Rutaceae,
swallowtail butterflies will lay their eggs on the leaves. You will
see the adults fluttering nervously around, like parents at a kindergarten
holiday show. |
Use one as an accent tree or mix a few into your naturalized
screening. |
We grow them in a few different sizes. Call for
current availability.
